Deductibles

#

Health insurance plans come in many complex configurations. Depending on the plan type and the number of dependents on it, there can be easily be 15 or more deductibles to track and as few as 1. We found one family that had well over 10 dependents on it. I explored an Instagram style layout with x and y scrolling, and a picker pattern inspired by food ordering apps and clothing color and size selection tools. We ultimately settled on the latter after it proved successful in user testing.

Hi-fidelity

The importance of pairing with your developers was proven in production. We had originally imagined the picker tool as a menu accessed in a mode. I asked our dev team if it was possible to animate the chart when the member had made a new selection as a method for instant feedback. They said it was harder to hold state until they exited the picker menu. We ditched the mode, and put the picker right on the detail view.
